March 26th, 2007

My youngest sister,Clarissa, asked where my dream vacation would be spent (she’s getting married this summer) My answer was somewhere in the British Virgin Islands. If I were rich and famous it would undoubtedly be Necker Island and I would take 27 of my best friends and stay the season!!!!Dream on!!

ITunes(TM)

January 28th, 2007

Mom has a beautiful voice and music has always been a part of our life. As Children, she taught the 4 of us to harmonize “Tell Me Why” during those 3 hour trips to our grandparents & later how to “Bop” before I entered Greiner Junior High. Mr. White and Ms. Brown were the two music teachers at Greiner, and each year both would insist publicly that each had the better chorus & therefore both classes would spend the entire year preparing for a big competition in the auditoium in front of the whole school. It was a “big deal” trust me. They picked out very popular songs of the day(doo-wap of course) & we just practiced our hearts out! Mr. White was my teacher, and of course I had a big crush as did all the girls. One day he asked the class if anyone had the doo-wap version of the 45 “In the still of the Night”. I quickly raised my hand saying oh yes I had it and would be glad to bring it to school the nest day!!! When Mom picked me up that afternoon,we had to rush to the record store & buy it!!! Another day Mr.White & Ms Brown devoted an entire class to the music of Harry Belefante and an artist named Yma Sumac(spelled backwards is Amy Camus?????). Another day,as part of the curriculum, we tripped to the Music Hall at Fair Park for a once in a lifetime performance. I was overwhelmed at the magnificence of the visual experience of the hall. It was magical, awesome, splendid, incredible, stupendous…….and it was…(tah dah) MARIA CALLAS in “LA TRAVIATA”. Unforgettable!!!!! The reason I named this blog ITunes(tm) is because among my 8000+ songs I have plenty of Doo-wap including” In the Still of the Night”, “Tell Me Why”, Maria Callas, Harry Belafante, and even Yma Sumac. Dallas Rocks and always has!

Dallas Schools

January 26th, 2007

A couple of nights ago, I tuned to channel 8 wfaa at 6:3o and watched a very uplifting and informative program sponsered by John Eagle(native Dallasite and auto dealer) Students from DISD produce this monthly profile of interesting students, teachers, former students, etc. On this particular segment, the Carter High School Principal was spotlighted. His name is Mr. Dupree. As the commentator told the story and interviewed Mr. Dupree’s students, the camera focused for a second or two an a poster of a popular movie “You,Me, and Dupree”. I have a horrible memory, can’t remember names, but being from Oak Cliff (1964 graduate) Carter High was a rival of Kimball(Mr Durrett was our incredible principal),I have been able to remember which school and oddly enough the name of the movie because Owen Wilson is from Dallas. The name of this program by the way is called “School Zone”. Dallas schools have produced some pretty spectacular producers & stars.

1936 Texas Centennial

January 26th, 2007

My dad saw the Dallas skyline & that famous flying red horse when he arrived from Brownwood, (West Texas), at age 20. This was his first time to be away from home. He had gotten a great job(though it was temporary) as the head usher at the State Fair Music Hall during the 1936 Texas Centennial. (Of all the stars he met, Lionel Hampton was his favorite performer). Old East Dallas was the most beautiful neighborhood and the people who lived here were just as perfect it seemed to him. He was so enthralled with Big D that he called his folks and told them that one day he wanted to live here and rear a family. He went to war,saw the world, came back to the states, met and married our Mississippi mom & brought her to Dallas to bring 4 of us into the world. Everytime the 6 of us returned from a visit to our grandparents in Brownwood, the minute Dad could see that Dallas silhouette, he would remind us all of how lucky we were to live in the most beautiful city in the world!!!! Ed Stanley loved our mom, us, and Dallas, Texas!!!!

Jimmy’s Food Store Dallas Texas

January 24th, 2007

A little over a year ago the most wonderful little corner grocery store was gutted by fire. Many thought we had lost this historic Dallas treasure located in “Old East Dallas”. Very fortunately, it has been restored, and is now one of my favorite places to shop. You’ve heard the expression “comfort food”! Well, this is what I call “comfort shopping”.The owners, the staff, and even the patrons somehow remind me of how lucky I am to be a native Dallasite.
